Greetings
Shodoshima is situated in the Setonaikai (Seto Inland Sea) National Park, and enjoys a mild, Mediterreanean climate.
The Sunshine Kai was established in 1978 by Tadao Kawanishi, who wished that the locals who have lost their children to the war would be able to live without having to worry about the need of care takers. The Sunshine Kai (literally, the 'Sunshine Group') is what we call a "shakai fukushi houjin," a social welfare corporation. That means we are neither completely privately-owned nor government-run; a social welfare corporation is a unique form of organization in Japan that stands somewhere in-between private- and govenrment-run corporations.
Today, the Sunshine Kai has three main locations over the island--Kamo (where our head office is), Yakatazaki and Nishimura-- and offers 21 welfare- and care-related services.
Japan as a nation is concerned with the issues related to our aging population and decreasing birthrate. Here in Shodoshima, these issues are even more serious since one in three islanders are above the age or 65. In times like this, the Sunshine Kai realizes that making a community where the elders enjoy their dignity is especially important.
We have always worked hard on improving our services and will continue to do so. Our services are closely attached to the local lifestyles.
